Idea and Inspiration
For the logo for the “Love of Lost” blog I decided to use a labyrinth as the center of a larger compass. The labyrinth is a symbol for a journey and the compass is a common symbol for travel. Both symbols are very personal to me, and I feel they are appropriate for a travel blog. I also considered using a labyrinth as the circular part of a globe instead of a compass, as the globe is also a common travel symbol, but felt that the compass better represented the concept of “lost.”

Design Process
I was inspired by a lot of different things. I have been enthralled with the legend of the minotaur and the labyrinth from Greek mythology since I was very small, and labyrinths have been a big part of my life so I knew I wanted to include one. I have also been thinking about this travel blog for a long time and collecting travel logos for years that I found interesting. When I went through my collection the ones I liked most all had compasses included.
I tried to use figure-ground and negative space with the labyrinth and to create balance with the circles and the compass points on all sides. I decided not to use color or to add the actual words “Love of Lost” because I felt that the labyrinth and compass were enough, and I wanted to make it a little more minimalistic, so I stuck with black and white. I feel that while there is a lot going on, the image is scalable. It would be large, but could also look good on a small business card.
Technical Detail
All the elements of the logo I created myself using Adobe Illustrator. My design process included creating 4 circles, and adding lines around the circles to create a labyrinth shape. I wanted to also erase portions of the black lines to create more of the labyrinth, but was not able to do this technologically, despite watching many tutorials. I am hoping to get help with this next week in class. Then I used the line tool to create the compass points, and used a font that I felt looked hand drawn, like something that would appear on a map.

I think my favorite part of your logo is that you changed the spiral into a labyrinth, I think it not only looks professional but pleasing to the eye as well. A couple things I would suggest trying is to make the lines on your labyrinth design thinner, the difference between thickness of the points on the compass and the lines of the labyrinth are too different and it looks a little odd. Also, another thing I think would benefit you would be to add a heart or something because your blog title has the word love in it, so that should be reflected in your logo, in the same way you had the word lost reflected in it. Overall, very good logo, just miner changes and it would be close to perfect; exceptional start with your logo and it looks like you’ve got a good grasp with the illustrator program, keep it up

The feedback I have received so far is to make the lines of the labyrinth thinner, and to make the thickness of the compass lines the same as the labyrinth lines. I will consider this. I like that the labyrinth lines are think, but might consider making the compass thicker as well. It was also suggested that I could add a heard to the logo since the name of the blog is “Love of Lost” and the logo does not include a “love” aspect. I had considered this already, but felt that adding a heart to the design would make it very crowded, and I was hoping to keep it as minimalistic as possible. I will try it to see how it looks and decide afterwards. I have not yet received all my feedback, but I also am hoping to update the labyrinth to create openings. Right now it’s not a real labyrinth,as there is nowhere to get in and out. I struggled to create these opening, and am hoping to get help with this in class on Thursday.

Jackson,
I really liked the Idea of a compass and the labyrinth because it turned out looking really nice. When I first looked at your draft I was able to tell that it had to do something with travel just because of the compass. So I would like to congratulate you on your ability to relate your logo with what you have in mind. One thing that I would suggest is to even out the thickness of the lines with the labyrinth and the outside compass area lines. I am not sure which would look nicer but it would look a little bit more proportional. Maybe it looks nice small but I feel that it would look a little bit off once enlarged on something like a billboard. Another thing that I would suggest is to attempt adding something perhaps with the paint-brush tool to represent the earth or a continent. Whichever is easier just to fill the empty space. Overall though I would say that you did a really good job keeping your design simple and relatable. With just a few minor adjustments your design will surely be something to look forward to seeing come together.

Your idea is both modern and ancient and incredibly appealing. I definitely see a greek mythology influence; but it very well could be a modern company logo. I agree with other input to thinner out your lines – perhaps expand the labyrinth a bit and give it the same handwritten feel as the flags pointing the cardinal points. I love the sources of inspiration you got – I also found this cool tutorial on how to bend words into shapes – it would be awesome if you could make the 4 triangles and the cardinal points look like flags with the letter making the shape. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3BHcregNUs It may be a stretch – but just play with it and see what appeals to you. It’s hard to provide further input when I think the product you provided looks so awesome. There’s this other tutorial that shows you how to put pictures behind letters; maybe you could play to an image that appeals to you to make a cool font. Or perhaps make a play on the 4 elements? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnIXLdJ0SGU Also I just saw your comment about the labyrinth and I found a super cool tutorial which may be of help! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lvk8G0StWJQ
